Why Is My Dog Acting Shy?

understanding first sessions and normal dog behavior.

As a canine massage and Reiki practitioner, I meet a lot of new dogs and just like people, every dog has their own unique way of responding to someone new entering their space. One question I hear from time to time from loving, attentive pet parents is:

“He’s usually so friendly... why is he being shy?”
“She normally loves people—this is unusual for her.”

First, I want to say this loud and clear: your dog’s behavior is completely normal. And no, I don’t take it personally, in fact, I get it.

🦮 Dogs Know I’m There For Them:

When I come into your home, I’m not just another guest. I’m arriving with a different energy and intention, and your dog knows it. Dogs are incredibly perceptive. They can sense I’m there for them specifically, but they may not understand exactly why or what to expect just yet.

For some dogs, that awareness stirs curiosity. For others, especially those who are aging, in discomfort, or have had a difficult past, it can bring hesitation. It’s not fear or dislike. It’s simply their way of figuring things out.

Trust Is Built, Not Rushed:

Imagine a stranger walking in and gently reaching out to touch your back or hold their hands near your body. Even with the best intentions, most of us would pause before leaning into that.

Dogs are the same way. Especially if they’re in pain or unsure, they need time to observe, process, and decide when they're ready. I honor that process through a consent-based approach. I never force interaction, I let the dog show me when they’re ready to engage. Sometimes that happens during the first session, and sometimes it takes a few visits. Both are normal. Both are respected.

📍What You Can Expect:

During a first session, your dog might:

  • Keep their distance or observe me from across the room

  • Sniff and retreat several times

  • Seem extra attached to you or unsure about what’s happening

  • Look sleepy but stay alert

  • Eventually settle near me, but not allow touch right away

All of this is part of the process. I build trust through body language, gentle energy, and letting your dog lead the way.

Shy Now, Relaxed Later:

Some of my most relaxed and affectionate canine clients today were hesitant or unsure at first. Once they realize I’m a safe presence and that our sessions make them feel better, they start to look forward to our time together. That transformation is one of my favorite parts of this work and it starts with trust.

You’re Not Doing Anything Wrong:

If you’re a pet parent reading this and felt worried that your dog “wasn’t acting like themselves” during their first session, please know this is completely normal. You’re doing something wonderful by supporting their wellbeing, and their cautious behavior is just part of the adjustment.

I’m here to support your dog, but also you. If you ever have questions or want to talk through your dog’s responses, I always welcome the conversation.

🐾 Final Thought: Trust the Process:

Healing whether physical, emotional, or energetic begins with trust. That’s the foundation of every session I offer. Your dog knows I’m there with a purpose. They just need a little time to decide how they want to receive that care and I’ll be right there when they’re ready.

With heart,
